Wi-Fi 7 Explained: What Is Real, What Is Marketing, and Whether to Upgrade

The headline speeds are technically achievable and practically irrelevant. The genuinely useful part of Wi-Fi 7 is a feature that makes your connection more consistent rather than faster.

Router boxes now advertise numbers in the tens of gigabits per second. You will not see them. Not because the specification is dishonest, but because those figures assume conditions that do not exist in a house: every antenna in use, maximum channel width, no interference, and a client device sitting almost on top of the router.

Which is a pity, because the specification contains one change that genuinely improves everyday use. It is just not the one on the box.

What actually changed

Four substantive differences from the previous generation.

Wider channels in the 6 GHz band

Wi-Fi 7 can use 320 MHz-wide channels, double the previous maximum. A wider channel carries more data, in the same way that a wider road carries more cars.

The catch is that 320 MHz channels only fit in the 6 GHz band, and 6 GHz has a real limitation: high frequencies do not pass through walls well. In practice, 6 GHz is excellent in the room with the router and unreliable two rooms away. It is not a whole-house band.

Denser encoding

The signal now packs more bits into each transmission, worth roughly 20 per cent throughput on paper. It requires a very clean signal, so you get the benefit close to the router and nothing at range. Real, minor.

Multi-Link Operation

This is the important one, and the only feature I would upgrade for.

Previously a device connected on one band at a time — 2.4, 5 or 6 GHz — and switching meant a brief disconnection. Multi-Link Operation lets a device use several bands simultaneously, as one logical connection.

That enables two genuinely valuable behaviours:

  • Aggregation. Combine bands for higher total throughput.
  • Redundancy. Send the same packet over two bands and use whichever arrives first.

The second is the interesting one. Wi-Fi's real weakness has never been peak speed; it has been the occasional 200 ms stall when a channel gets briefly congested or the microwave starts. Sending redundantly across two independent bands makes those stalls largely disappear.

What this means in practice

Multi-Link Operation does not make your download finish sooner. It makes video calls stop freezing, cloud gaming stop lurching, and wireless feel closer to wired. For most households that is a much bigger quality-of-life improvement than another gigabit of theoretical throughput.

Smarter handling of interference

Preamble puncturing lets a router use a wide channel even when part of it is occupied, by masking out the busy portion instead of dropping to a narrower channel. Useful in flats and dense areas, where clean wide channels do not exist.

Why you will not see the advertised speed

The number on the box is the sum of theoretical maximums across all bands at once. Getting near it requires all of the following simultaneously:

  • A client device with as many antennas as the router, which phones and laptops do not have
  • A clear 320 MHz channel in the 6 GHz band, which means a quiet radio environment
  • Line of sight, at close range
  • Something at the other end capable of supplying data that fast

That last one deserves emphasis. If your internet connection is 500 Mbps, no router improves your download speed. Wi-Fi is only the bottleneck if it is slower than your internet, and for most people it stopped being the bottleneck two generations ago.

Where the real bottleneck usually is

Before spending anything, work out which of these is actually limiting you.

Only the third row is a Wi-Fi 7 problem. The others are cheaper to fix, and coverage in particular is fixed by placement and mesh, not by a newer standard.

Should you upgrade?

Probably yes if: your router is more than five or six years old, you have twenty or more connected devices, you work from home on video all day, or you have a wired backhaul between mesh nodes and want to use it properly.

Probably not if: your current setup is fine, your internet is under 500 Mbps, your devices are older than 2024, or your actual complaint is dead spots. A newer standard does not improve coverage. Physics did not change.

Definitely not if: you are buying it to make your internet faster. It cannot.

Choosing hardware sensibly

If you do upgrade, the specification numbers matter less than these:

  1. A 2.5 Gbps or faster wired port. If the router's own uplink is limited to 1 Gbps, everything downstream is too. This is the most commonly overlooked spec.
  2. Multi-Link Operation actually supported, and enabled by default. Some cheaper units claim Wi-Fi 7 while omitting the one feature worth having.
  3. Smart Queue Management, sometimes listed as fq_codel or SQM. This is what stops one large download ruining everyone's call, and it improves the felt experience more than raw speed.
  4. Wired backhaul on mesh systems. A mesh node connected by cable is dramatically better than one relaying wirelessly. If you can run one cable, run it.
  5. A vendor with a firmware track record. A router is an internet-facing computer that you never look at. Updates matter more than antennas.
  6. Local management that works without an account. Some manufacturers now require a cloud login for basic configuration. Avoid; see our notes on cloud-dependent devices.

Placement, which is free

Before buying anything, try this. It reliably beats a hardware upgrade.

  • Put the router central and high, not in a cupboard behind the television.
  • Keep it away from metal, mirrors and water — including large fish tanks, which are genuinely effective radio blockers.
  • Do not put it next to the microwave or a cordless base station.
  • Use automatic channel selection, or scan and pick a quiet channel manually if you are in a flat.
  • Wire anything that does not move. Desktops, consoles, televisions, network storage. Every device you take off the air makes the air better for the ones that need it.

The summary

Wi-Fi 7's marketing is about speed and its actual value is about consistency. If your wireless is unreliable rather than slow, Multi-Link Operation is a real improvement and worth the money. If your wireless is slow, the problem is almost certainly your internet plan, your router placement, or your coverage — and a new standard fixes none of the three.

The most useful upgrade in most homes remains an ethernet cable to whatever matters most. It is not exciting, and it is still the correct answer.
